Former Miss USA Cheslie Kryst died Sunday morning shared her family and the New York Police Department is still investigating her death. She was 30 years old. In 2019, Cheslie’s Miss USA pageant victory marked a historic first when the winners of America’s three biggest beauty pageants were all women of color. Her priorities and perspective of life echoed awareness about discrimination, mental health, and women’s empowerment.

Cheslie Kryts died by falling a high-rise building, probably from the 60th floor, in Manhattan’s West Side area. She owned an apartment in the same building and died of having multiple blunt injuries. As of now, her death is being investigated as a suicide. A day earlier, Cheslie posted “May this day bring you rest and peace” on Instagram alongside her photograph.

Her family is in complete shock “In devastation and great sorrow, we share the passing of our beloved Cheslie”, they wrote in a statement confirming Kryst painful departure. The entertainment television show “Extra” where she worked as a correspondent also shared their condolences and said “Cheslie was not just a vital part of our show. She was a beloved part of our Extra family and touched the entire staff. Our deepest condolences to all her family and friends.”

Born on April 28, 1991, in Jackson, Michigan, Kryst belonged to a Polish family. She was a sibling to four brothers and a sister. Her mother, April Simpkins, was a former Mrs. North Carolina US in 2002. Cheslie completed her high school education at Northwestern High School and graduated from Fort Mill High School. She earned her Law degree and MBA from Wake Forest University in North Carolina.
Kryst soon become licensed to practice law in both North and South Carolina. She worked as a civil attorney who conducted free legal work for prisoners who may have been sentenced unjustly. Apart from it, she is also the owner of the fashion blog White Collar Glam, where she taught women to dress appropriately in white-collar jobs.

Her Pageantry career started during her teenage years when she won Miss Freshman at Northwestern High School and later Miss Fort Mill High School. She made two attempts to win Miss North Carolina USA and succeeded the third time when she was crowned by none other than Kaaviya Sambasivam. In October 2019, Kryst became a New York correspondent for Extra, after working as a special correspondent in September 2019. For which she earned two Daytime Emmy Award nominations for an outstanding entertainment news program.

Cheslie later went on to win  Miss USA 2019 competition held in Nevada. Kryst’s reign was originally scheduled to end by 2020, but due to coronavirus pandemic, she became the longest-reigning Miss USA surpassing the record of Nia Sanchez. Her reign finally ended on November 9, 2020.

Despite her star-studded career, former Miss USA also prioritized mental health. She conveyed many meaningful messages for the youth of our society who suffered from mental health issues through her frequent Facebook and Instagram lives. Her interviews too contain her views on mental health.

“When I’m not talking to my counselor, I take time at the end of every single day to just decompress, “I unplug. I shut my phone off. I don’t answer messages. I just sit and watch my favorite movie.” said Cheslie Kryst in an interview with The New York Times.

Cheslie also fought for equality and made a statement for diversity. She won the Miss USA crown in her natural hairs without actually materializing anything. She said that it was important for her to feel beautiful and worthy just the way she is. This way she challenged conventional thinking about women’s beauty and appearances.

Cheslie Kryst is survived by her parents and five siblings.
